European Heritage Days in Belarus 2014: The City Space: A Scene For Action.
European Heritage Days (EHD) are held in Belarus annually. This year the European Heritage Days in Belarus have been devoted to the theme «The City Space: a scene for action», and their opening ceremony took place on 18 September 2014 at the building of the Minsk historic city hall. Dr. Viachaslau Yarashevich, the director of the Council of Europe Information Point, was invited to make a welcome word at the opening ceremony. It was also attended by the deputy minister of culture, Mr. Alexsandr Yatsko, as well as by representatives from the Ministry of Culture, Ministry for Foreign Affiars, other public institutions and NGOs.
The programme of the event included public lectures by the architect Mr Vadim Glinnik («Historical center of the city: new and old»), and by the sculptor Mr Pavel Vainitskii («New practices of art in the city space»). A concert programme and presentation of the booklet «The City Space: a scene for action» (http://livingheritage.by/Publikacyi/Buklet_EHD_2014.pdf) were also among this year's EHD events.
The Council of Europe Information Point encourages initiatives related to European culture, which fit well with the idea that «culture is the heart and soul of democracy» (http://www.coe.int/t/dg4/cultureheritage/culture/default_en.asp). As part of its mission to promote CoE values in Belarus it distributed brochures «The Council of Europe review», «The Council of Europe and Belarus» (in Belarusian) and CoE stickers at the opening ceremony of the 2014 EHD in Belarus.
